About Me

As you may have already caught on, my name is Greg Smith. I’m a Wasilla, Alaska-based IT professional with a knack for technology who loves a challenge. But really, I’m not an IT professional at all, yet. I’m currently a security officer and an EMT on Alaska’s North Slope – the oil field, not the ski resort. Basically, it’s all about my love for technology. My determination to get on a career path with something I’ve enjoyed since elementary school. Finally, it is about the drive inside me. I was able to pass both the CCNA – Routing and Switching and CompTIA A+ certifications completely through self-study.

I’ve been anointed as the official unofficial “IT Guy” at every job I’ve held, and I love every minute of it. I enjoy helping people to learn technology. I love learning new technology myself. And I love stepping back and being able to say, “I built that” or “I helped make that better.” I have a home lab that I use to help bridge the experience gaps. With it, I teach myself everything from Active Directory administration to virtualization.

I am currently seeking opportunities where I can build real-world work experience part-time. Such an opportunity would need to work with me so that I could keep my current 2-week-on, 2-week-off job. Why you may ask? Well, because like everyone else, I have bills to pay, and trying to live on an entry-level IT wage won’t cut it. I’m willing to forego the time off, so that I can, in time, make the transition from a job that pays the bills, to a career I love.
